Organization Overview
The Grayson Gallery and Art Center (GGAC) was established as a non-profit organization in 2011 with the mission to provide an inclusive, accessible venue for the visual and performing arts. The GGAC has brought visual art exhibits and live musical entertainment to the area for over 11 years and has hosted well over 150 events featuring musical acts in diverse music genres.
We have local community support, with our space provided by the Grayson Tourism Commission, a budget from the City of Grayson, sponsorships from local businesses, and a dynamic volunteer Board of Directors. The GGAC is also a member of the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce, which has organized a community festival for the last 50 years, including musical acts.
In addition, some funders who recognize us as social change agents and help us provide programming to diverse groups through art and music include: Brushy Fork Institute at Berea College, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and Arts for All Kentucky. Recently, the Kentucky Arts Council and South Arts reached out to provide us with funding to help continue operations due to Covid shutdowns.
The GGAC has received numerous awards, most recently an “Appalachian Arts and Entertainment Award,” judged against entries from all 13 Appalachian states. The GGAC won for a documentary called Appalachian Women in the Arts, funded in part by Kentucky Foundation for Women and featuring women in various genres in Appalachian music. How will your town or city benefit from a Levitt AMP [Your City] Music Series and how will the series reflect the three main goals of Levitt AMP: 1) Amplify community pride and the city’s unique character; 2) enrich lives through the power of free, live Music; 3) illustrate the importance of vibrant public Places?
The residents of the city of Grayson have been a little “out of the loop” when it comes to attending large concerts and musical performances, except for the once or twice yearly events held in town. Those who are able to travel seem to have to go somewhere else to enjoy larger concerts of various genres. Having a music series offering different kinds of musical entertainment on a larger scale would enable many in our community the opportunity to enjoy outstanding performances close to home. Focusing on Grayson’s slogan as “The Heart of the Parks” would identify our city as “the” place to be—here in the heart of the surrounding area—as opposed to going out of town for fun events. The music series will give residents something unique and special of which to be proud. The opportunity to invite others to our venue for a concert series will lift us up in the eyes of those who don’t know much about this wonderful small town and what we can do. Music is so very important in offering a better quality of life for those who live here. Experiencing musical genres a bit different than many are used to at a free concert series will be a true game changer. Neighborhoods within walking distance or a short drive away will be able to enjoy the concerts and other festivities without the stress and concern of costly admission, leaving local dollars available for making other purchases. Expanding use of the sports park by adding the music series will also engage a group who may not be coming to the park for sports activities. This music series will reflect the Levitt values of inclusivity by bringing in diverse music genres, the value of engagement by providing a new form of entertainment, and the value of accessibility because the concert series is free, and the park and all its amenities are accessible to those of all abilities.
Explain how the Levitt AMP [Your City] Music Series will play a role in enlivening the selected public space and surrounding areas.
Over 30 years ago, the dream of a large community park brought our people together from all walks of life, local and state government, businesses, and organizations for a common goal. Small steps were taken, but it was not until major funding was in place and the Grayson Tourism & Convention Commission became able to finance this project that the dream started coming to life. The City of Grayson had previously donated a 32-acre parcel and the Tourism Commission purchased another 32 acres, so the park would be large enough for sports fields, recreational activities, walking trails, open areas and more. One of the items locals really wanted in the park was an amphitheater for concerts, outdoor dramas, and other arts productions, so the amphitheater was built in the first construction phase. However, then COVID hit and prevented public gatherings, so no activities could be held in the park or at the amphitheater. This music series will be the perfect opportunity to utilize this wonderful community resource. The stage is in an amazing area, located between the ball field areas, the children’s playground and splash pad and near the Little Sandy River. Performers on stage will be facing the main part of the park with the concert-goers facing the amphitheater with Kentucky’s beautiful rolling hills and the fork of the river off in the background. Activating this space will enable all our residents to enjoy the music!
